Three realities of my day:
- Elena and I were on the floor again at 4 AM this (yesterday?) morning, counting hippos and whispering Raffi’s songs.
- I did not have time (or the mental space) to write and schedule slice # 7 before the “past 4 PM Mama duties” began.
- I still want to get my slice “out of the way” as my day starts so I can enjoy reading and commenting on others throughout the day.
One funny surprise:
As I clicked and scrolled, trying to decide what to write about, I peeked (funny, I use that word since I can barely keep my eyes open) at my calendar for next week and was reminded of Google’s insights function—I blogged about it a while ago. I tried reflecting on this week’s [normal] craziness, but, in all honesty, I got bored after the first paragraph, so I tried writing a poem instead.

Six hours drifting in admin land,
While curriculum makes its stand.
Tasks creep up—no end in sight.
Yet elementary is like… Wait, what?
Preschool’s buzzing, Heggerty too,
Coaching, data—join the queue.
PD whispers, “Open the book!”
But my brain is out the door.
(At least I got to eat some lunch!)
With time left over (wait, what?),
Do I plan for Kinder or just sit flat?
Either way, it’s clear to see,
This mess is working fine for me.
I like the poem, but I *love* your first line: “Elena and I were on the floor again at 4 AM this (yesterday?) morning, counting hippos and whispering Raffi’s songs.”
Honestly, that is a) a slice and b) a poem all by itself.
I used to try to blog first thing every day, but now I just get it done whenever… sigh.

It works for me, too! I love the set up with Elena and “whispering Raffi songs,” but these lines are my favorites: “Preschool’s buzzing, Heggerty too,
Coaching, data—join the queue.” I’m a sucker for rhyme that feels completely natural and packs a wallop. That!

What a clever poem! I have never thought to write a poem based on my Google Calendar, but yours works really well! I love the line- “Yet elementary is like… Wait, what?”

Oh, yes ~ we are on the same page with curriculum work in schools, I see! Your poem captures the reality of moments in (wait, what?) – – this year has been full of those questioning moments to stop and process for a minute. Always something to wrap our minds around, for sure. Love that you captured it in a poem.

Ha! I love this poem idea. It makes for a lighthearted way to look at your very busy schedule. Elementary IS like, wait, what?? Though I’m sure elementary exists within those other colors and areas (in classrooms, for sure!).
