Oh, Hi

We sit in the car, waiting for the line to move so we can buy some tequeños for breakfast. The morning sun floods through the window and hits the side of your door. Bright yellow like the ones in a kid’s book but warmer.

You lift your hand to move the book from your lap and notice the shadow it casts on the dark plastic of the door. Your face freezes, and you ask, “What’s that?”

I see you in the camera, curious about that black hand that moves at the same time! I say, “Elena, that’s your shadow. That’s your hand!”

You don’t seem to understand. So I tell you to wave.

When you see the shadow wave back, you giggle, say, “Oh, hi!” and do it again and again until we move and lose the sun.

“Oh no!”
