For Amy

It’s Slice of Life Tuesday, and I want to show up for my writing partner who is much better at keeping up with this commitment.

Today was tough, but good—just as an athlete feels burning muscles while running an exhilarating marathon.

Brain rushing, feet moving, ideas popping. A busy day before we see students and families tomorrow. Meeting after meeting after meeting.

So many meeting notes to summarize and send to teams tomorrow. Ever-growing To-Do list. An afternoon planning session with a new third-grade team.

And then, an alarm. Loud announcement. Flashing lights. Visual confirmation. Yes, we should exit the building.

No fire, just a vivid sensation of Miami heat. And the many confused faces gathered outside.

A big plant truck in the wrong place, water running, hands over heads. Should we move the boxes? The unexpected break I didn’t know I needed in almost 90-degree weather.

Not every Tuesday will have a broken pipe to force me to drop everything and take a break or will feel busy and energizing at the same time, but I do hope to show up for Amy and invite us to write. Even if I write nonsense like this.

  1. Phew! I’m tired just reading about this whirlwind of a day! Your use of fragmented sentences and short phrases really captures the momentum of your busy day. I love that you and Amy support each other and motivate each other. Good luck with the beginning of the year!

  2. I love this “nonsense,” too. And I remember Miami school launch, the heat of it all with internal engines burning alight, ready for the new year. Good luck to you!
