SOL Tuesday: Your Words

“No no no”

Those are your words as you check the green flaps on the third page of the book. You are right. Spot is not in the piano, and as you turn the next page, you carry the pattern by saying “no no no” as you check under the stairs.

Hearing you say and repeat words this week has been incredibly fulfilling and wonderful. You join your fingertips, bring them together three times, and say, “Mo,” forming a perfect circle with your lips.

You know we understand you, and you’re eager to communicate more and more.

I brought you to the kitchen this early morning. We opened the fridge, and its light illuminated the still-dark kitchen. Before I could reach for it, you said and signed, “Tete,” which is the word we use for a bottle.

Your face lit up, and my heart did, too.

I write these words as you browse through your books and pull the ones from the top shelf because now you can stand for longer, all you want is what’s up there.

I write these words you will read one day, and I think of maybe writing your new and evolving words as well. I could grab a piece of chart paper and begin documenting what you say to us, what you say to you.

I write these words as I see you stare at the cow in the book. I’m grateful for this early morning with you and the words you inspire.

  1. Ana, how succinctly and beautifully you capture the magic of language acquisition – every day is full of untold wonder as a little one grows into toddlerhood. To me there’s a sacred feeling to it all. I feel it here in your words. Like the love flowing from every one you’ve written here. Look at her looking at her book, just absorbing…I love this idea of documenting “what you say to you”. I savor this precious slice of life.

  2. Ana, what a precious peek into your home and your sweet baby, learning and growing, thinking and now saying. I love her no, no, no when she doesn’t find Spot. I so love reading that book with little ones. It’s one of my favorites.

  3. What treasures these words will be. They already are! I started writing in my blog when my kids were little…for years I wrote them letters every Sunday. They’re as much a gift to myself as I know they will be for them some day!
