Sundays are typically easy for me, I have my students from 7:55 to 11:40 and then they spend the rest of the day in specials. I get to plan, catch up with emails, and get a bunch of other stuff done with all that time, so the first day of my week is usually just fine. There were a few things that made today an even better day:
- I got a note from one of students that said “I love you, you make me laugh.” As a kindergarten teacher, I’m used to receiving lots of drawings and notes, but this one felt special. I love the fact that this girl has fun in my room.
- One of my ELL students showed me the labels he had added to his book about airplanes: “aaaaaa” for when the plane shakes and people are afraid and “ooooo” for the noise the plane makes when it takes off. This kid has gone from barely communicating, to having full conversations with friends and taking risks in his own writing. Love it!
- We had a change in our transition to Writing Workshop, instead of asking my students to grab their folders like we usually do, I asked them to also get a whiteboard and marker to play a phonics game. They looked at me funny (routine changes in Kindergarten are a huge deal lol) so I said “it may be hard for some to remember all the things you will need to do to be ready, but I know you can do hard things, so go ahead”… I turned to talk to my co-teacher Jill, and after 2 minutes I turned back to them and they were all ready to go. They said “see, Ms. Ana? it wasn’t that hard.”
- Dismissal time came, and all students got ready to go home or to their after school activity. The ones who take the bus left the room first and then I started dismissing the rest. One of those bus riders ran back, so I asked him if he had forgotten something, he responded “yes, I forgot to say ‘See you tomorrow, alligator!’ or crocodile? I don’t know.”
It’s easy to get home, make some dinner, check on my family, catch up with Tim, and then get ready for the next day. Days like the one I had today, with lovely and fun moments, happen often and I hold on to those memories until they fade. Tonight, I thought it’d be better to take some time to be thankful for having such joy at work.
Cheers
